Under the spreading deficit,
 The Fitzroy Smithy stands;
The smith, a spendthrift man is he,
 With too much on his hands;
But the muscles of his brawny jaw
 Are strong as iron bands.

Artist’s Profile:
Rex Newell sold his first painting at the age of 14. Born in Fredrickton, NSW, he later moved to Sydney to study for 3 years at the Parramatta Fine Art Society in conjunction with 5 years at Sydney Technical College studying Commercial Art and Sign Writing. Described as a “contemporary” artist, Rex also shows Romantic incluences in his work. Over the 30 years of his career to date, his work is recognised and valued all over the world. His paintings are included in the private collections of such notables as Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edingburg, Crown Prince Harold of Norway, and the President of Ireland. American actor John Wayne, also collected his work. Over the years Rex has indulged his love of outback Australia through extensive travel, and it was this that inspired his first book Outback Pubs of Australia. This prize winning edition was soon followed by his interpretation through art of Favourite Poems of Henry Lawson, Favourite Poems of Banjo Patterson his third book and, like the others, shows his talent for the passionate yet subtle representation of his subjects.
